Benno, Counsel

“You’re encouraged to take ownership – there’s always someone to spar with, but your files are truly your own.”

As a counsel in the Belgian tax practice at Loyens & Loeff, Benno sits at the heart of some of the firm’s most complex and high-profile work. His role spans the full breadth of transactional tax matters, from M&A transactions and financing deals to intragroup restructurings. Alongside this, he also advises clients in tax controversy cases, supporting them throughout audits and proceedings before Belgian and international tax courts.

Continuous learning through complex, cross-border matters

For Benno, the intellectual challenge is a defining feature of the role. Working within a large, internationally oriented tax team means exposure to complex, cross-border matters for high-profile clients. These cases demand strong technical expertise, but they also provide continuous opportunities to deepen and sharpen that expertise.

What stands out to Benno is that technical excellence is only one part of the equation. As lawyers grow within the organisation, there is a strong emphasis on developing soft skills as well. Coaching trajectories and close collaboration with colleagues allow him to build social and leadership skills, while actively helping others grow into their roles.

"Because we operate as a top-tier tax team with an international reach, you’re constantly challenged to be at the top of your technical game."

~ Benno

Independence, personal connection and team spirit

The sense of ownership is one of the aspects Benno values most about working at Loyens & Loeff. From an early stage, associates are trusted to manage their own files and take responsibility for client matters, while still benefiting from the support and expertise of the wider team. For Benno, that balance between autonomy and collaboration is both motivating and empowering.

Beyond the work itself, team spirit plays an important role in daily life at the firm. In Belgium, Benno describes a lively social calendar, ranging from informal Friday drinks at the inhouse bar to team outings in the city. Firmwide traditions such as the annual New Year’s party and the much-anticipated ski trip provide opportunities to celebrate successes together and strengthen connections across teams.

When asked what advice he would give to prospective colleagues, Benno keeps it simple: come and meet the team. Internships are a valuable way to get a head start and experience the culture firsthand, but above all, authenticity matters. Technical skills can be developed over time; building genuine relationships is what truly makes the difference at Loyens & Loeff.
